Travellers are being coerced into performing sexual acts in return for farm employers signing off on backpacker visa applications, Queensland's Anti-Discrimination Commissioner ADCQ says. Kevin Cocks has told the ABC some employers are withholding signing off on visa applications in order to manipulate travellers. Backpackers who have come to Australia on a one-year Working Holiday subclass visa are required to undertake at least three months of work in regional or rural Australia in order to qualify for a second year. Upon completion, farmers or contractors are obliged to sign off on visa application paperwork to confirm the applicant has finished farm work.
Bodies of two Dalit girls, aged 13 and 16, have been found on their family farm in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. A year-old, who was also found at the same spot in Unnao district, is in a serious condition in hospital. The girls belonged to the same family - the older girls were sisters and the year-old was their cousin. Their families say they were found on Wednesday evening with their hands and legs tied with their own clothes.
